COVID 19 Pandemic and Its Economic Spatial Effect: An Empirical Evidence on East Java

This study identifies how the effect of COVID 19 spreads over in Indonesia area especially East Java where the population is the highest among other provinces and the number of positive cases of COVID 19 and may have economic impact both for the local and its neighbors’ areas. The data is dis-aggregated in the District Level (Kabupaten/Kota) and map code is taken from GADM, whereas the COVID 19 data are collected from the official local government website. The economic indicator represented is real regional product domestic which are provided quarterly by Badan Pusat Statistics (BPS). The period of analysis covers quarter two and quarter 3 of 2020. Generalized Spatial Two Stage Least Square (GS2SLS) in the Spatial Auto Regression (SAR) is applied to identify the spatial economic effects of the pandemic locally in East Java districts. The result shows that the pandemic does not have spatial effect meaning that it is does not spread among local neighbor significantly but mostly because traveling further than to their neighbors even though their economies contagious each other shown by the significance of variable regional income which is also confirmed by Moran Index. On the other side, the local variables such as population and sex ratio has also important on the economic performance of the regions in East Java.

Novel Corona Virus or COVID 19 is a virus that affects the respiratory system and creates serious complications in the human body. To check the community spread of this virus many countries like China, Italy, Spain, USA and India resorted to partial and complete lockdown thus leading to a standstill in business operations. As physical movement of customers and sellers got restricted, the alternative was to use electronic commerce or E-Channels to fulfill their needs. This research paper is an endeavor to understand the economic impact of lockdown due to Corona Virus impact and whether the digital economy has succeeded in creating an alternative platform to keep the business transactions going
